RESEARCH INTEREST I have 2 principle research interests. The first is to develop therapeutic vaccines against gastrointestinal malignancies. At the present time we are working on a DNA vaccine against pancreatic cancer in a murine model. This pancreatic cancer vaccine is the furthest along in development and clinical trials could begin within the two years. In addition to the actual the vaccines we also work on ways to augment the effects of the vaccinations by modulating the immune system using monoclonal antibodies and chemotherapy. Currently we are focusing on depletion of regulatory T-cells as strategy to augment vaccinations against pancreatic cancer. My second research interest is in elucidating basic liver immunology. The liver has many unique immunosuppressive properties which may be related to the presentation of antigen without costimulation. We are in the process of obtaining human tissues to pursue this hypothesis. SELECTED PUBLICATIONS 1. Hawkins WG, Jarnagin WR, DeMatteo RP, Blumgart LH, Fong Y.
